Survive the First Hour — The Walking Dead Online 3
Your first hour in The Walking Dead Online 3 determines whether you start a profitable survival streak or respawn repeatedly with nothing. This guide provides a minute-by-minute plan for gearing, walker headshot practice, and safe looting in Woodbury during Early Access.
Minutes 0-10 — Spawn and Basic Loot
After spawning, orient yourself and move toward Woodbury residential buildings. Search containers with E (PC) or the interact button (mobile). Priority pickups: any melee weapon, bandages, and a backpack if you find one. Avoid gunfire — it attracts walkers and players. Use melee headshots on isolated walkers to practice the core mechanic without wasting ammo you do not yet have.
Minutes 10-20 — First Firearm
Continue searching Woodbury for a USP pistol or similar firearm. Once found, equip it and stock any pistol ammo. Practice headshots on walkers at medium range — right-click aim on PC, hold aim button on mobile. Remember: body shots do not kill walkers. If you cannot headshot reliably yet, stick with melee for close encounters.
Minutes 20-35 — Gear Up
Your minimum first-hour loadout: one firearm, one melee weapon, bandages filling 2-3 inventory slots, and a backpack if found (+10 slots). Equip the backpack immediately. Drop any junk items that waste slots — you have only 20 base. Open inventory with G (PC) or bag icon (mobile) only when safe from walkers and players.
First Hour Loot Priority
- 1. Melee weapon — Silent walker kills, no ammo needed.
- 2. Firearm (USP) — Range safety and PvP deterrence.
- 3. Bandages — Heal after walker scratches and falls.
- 4. Backpack — +10 inventory slots for future runs.
- 5. Pistol ammo — Only as much as fits after essentials.
Minutes 35-50 — Expand and Practice
With basic gear, expand into slightly farther Woodbury buildings and outskirts. Practice switching between melee (silent) and firearm (range) using fight mode (F on PC). Learn sprint (Shift) and crouch (C) for movement control. Do not travel to National Guard or Correctional Facility yet unless you are confident in headshot accuracy.
Do not enter PvP zones during your first hour. Players with AK-47s and plate carriers will kill unprepared beginners instantly.
Minutes 50-60 — Plan Your Next Session
End your first hour by extracting to a safe area with your loadout intact. You should have: firearm, melee, meds, backpack, and confidence in headshot mechanics. Next session targets: Correctional Facility for mid-tier loot, then National Guard via our National Guard guide.
Use the inventory planner to plan your second session loadout. Read combat controls for fight mode depth. Join Discord at discord.gg/zPY878jtTV for group invites.
After the First Hour
Once your first hour ends with basic gear, transition to session two goals: Correctional Facility mid-tier loot, consistent headshot accuracy above 80% on walkers, and first backpack equipped permanently. Session three targets first National Guard push with squad support if possible. The first hour is the tutorial — everything afterward builds on fundamentals established in these initial 60 minutes.
First Hour on Mobile vs PC
Mobile first-hour players should prioritize melee over firearms for walker kills due to touch aim difficulty. PC players can integrate USP headshots earlier. Both platforms should avoid PvP zones entirely during the first hour and focus on Woodbury container looting and control familiarity before expanding to harder content in subsequent sessions.
If you die during the first hour, do not rage-quit. Respawn, return to Woodbury, and re-loot. Death is common — gear recovery takes 10 minutes with practice.
The first hour establishes habits that persist through your entire TWD Online 3 experience. Players who learn headshot discipline, inventory awareness, and zone danger assessment early progress dramatically faster than those who rush military content without fundamentals.
