How to Beat Walkers — The Walking Dead Online 3
Walkers in The Walking Dead Online 3 require headshots to kill — body shots and limb hits will not eliminate them. This guide teaches headshot technique with firearms and melee, fight mode usage, silent clearing strategies, and horde management for every POI in TWD Online 3 Early Access.
The Headshot Rule
The single most important combat rule in TWD Online 3: walkers die ONLY from headshots. This applies to all weapons — USP, AK-47, M24, melee, everything. New players who spray body shots waste ammo, alert more walkers with gunfire, and die confused about why walkers keep standing. Always aim for the head.
Headshot-only is confirmed for all walker encounters. This is not a bug — it is core game design from developer TWD Online.
Firearm Headshots
PC: right-click to aim down sights, place crosshair on walker head, left-click to fire. Mobile: hold aim button, track head, tap fire. At close range, hip-fire headshots work with shotguns. At medium range, ADS with USP or rifle. At long range, M24 or Springfield for one-shot headshot potential.
Melee Headshots — Silent Kills
Melee is the stealth option. Approach from behind when possible, aim swings at the head, confirm kill before advancing. Melee headshots make no gunshot noise — critical for looting Woodbury and Correctional Facility without attracting hordes or alerting nearby players. Toggle fight mode (F) before entering melee-clearing sections.
Melee vs Firearm Decision Guide
- Use melee — 1-3 walkers in enclosed space, stealth required, ammo conservation.
- Use firearms — 4+ walkers in open area, range needed, speed priority.
- Switch mid-fight — Firearm for initial group, melee to clean stragglers silently.
- Always carry both — One inventory slot for melee is mandatory on every run.
Horde Management
Walker hordes form when gunfire alerts nearby infected or when you fail to kill walkers quickly. If overwhelmed: sprint (Shift) to create distance, find a doorway to funnel walkers single-file, headshot them one at a time with melee or firearm. Never let hordes surround you in open areas — plate carrier (+50 HP) does not save you from continuous attacks.
Building Clearing Strategy
Enter buildings in crouch (C). Clear room by room with melee headshots. If you alert a group, back into a chokepoint and headshot them as they file through. Correctional Facility cell blocks and Woodbury houses are classic clearing scenarios. See combat controls for fight mode integration.
Doorway funneling is the most effective horde technique. One walker at a time, always headshot, never panic spray.
Common Mistakes
Body shot spraying. Ignoring melee for silent clears. Reloading in open areas surrounded by walkers. Not using fight mode when switching weapons. Fighting hordes in open fields instead of chokes. Practice on isolated walkers near spawn until headshots feel natural before military zone runs.

Walker Spawn Behavior
Walkers respawn over time at all POIs, meaning cleared areas repopulate during long loot runs. Do not assume a building that was walker-free ten minutes ago remains safe. Re-check rooms when returning through previously cleared paths during extended National Guard circuits or multi-POI loot routes across the map.
Walker Noise Mechanics
Gunfire alerts walkers in a radius around the shot. Sprinting generates noise that can attract nearby walkers. Crouch-walking and melee headshots are silent approaches ideal for stealth segments of loot routes. Understanding noise mechanics prevents accidental horde formation that wastes ammo and alerts PvP campers to your location at military POIs.
Combine walker combat mastery with map knowledge for efficient progression. Silent melee clears through Woodbury and Correctional Facility preserve ammo for National Guard PvP where firearms become essential against both walkers and hostile survivors contesting military loot spawns.
